I will never forget Professor Toch. He was a brilliant scholar, the consummate professor, a true gentleman, and a role model to many students whom he mentored with generosity and kindness. Professor Toch helped me to grow professionally and to become the scholar I am today. He supported me over the years in many ways. I will always be grateful that I had the opportunity to know Professor Toch. His impact on countless lives is truly immeasurable.

I enrolled at the UAlbany School of Criminal Justice many years ago intending to get a Master´s degree in criminal justice. I then planned to resume working for the Mass. Dept. of Correction in Boston where I "knew" that I had found a home both professionally and geographically. I had a full scholarship at Albany and was assigned to assist Dr. Toch with some of his research. He didn't really need me, but I enjoyed him in class, and he encouraged me to earn a PhD. I followed his advice and subsequently had a very rewarding professional and academic career in Albany where I still live after all this time. I will always be very grateful for the interest that Dr. Toch took in me and for the opportunities that I subsequently had as a result of his guidance. Suffice to say that his impact continues undiminished by his passing.

Dear Toch Family Members:
My condolences ion the passing of a brilliant criminologist and one of the most distinguished scholars in UAlbany history. I interviewed Dr. Toch many times at the Times Union for my coverage of mental health issues in New York’s prisons. His insights were invaluable in holding prison officials accounts and preserving the humanity and dignity of prisoners.
I always enjoyed our conversations.
With sympathy,
Paul Grondahl
