In the summer of 1983 I responded to an ad posted at SUNY Albany for a gardener/handyman to do odd jobs. At the time I was a graduate student, working on my M.A. in history. I am glad I answered because the person looking for help was Dr. Young. I only helped around his old farm in Wyantskill for a few summers but our friendship lasted and we stayed in touch. We had both come from blue collar families and were both veterans. (He still had his old uniform). He was a good guy. We had many long conversations about many different topics. RIP Art.

I am proud to have been a neighbor. I spoke with him only a few times, but he always remembered me and my family. What a gift he was to the neighborhood. He is already missed.

My family was privileged to spend some holiday get-togethers with Art and Bob, and we enjoyed those times immensely. So much of Art's life we didn't know. Thanks to Bob for this wonderful history!
A friend once mentioned she had seen the phrase and question (I'm paraphrasing): "There is a dash between the dates when a person entered this physical existence and when they left...How did you spend your dash?" Art certainly spent his to the fullest!

Dr. Young was an accomplished and wonderful man who will be greatly missed. His friend Bob helped him live a long and productive life so Don and I were able to enjoy his friendship for many years.

My condolences and heartfelt thanks to Bob for taking such loving care of Art. One of my fondest memories of Art is riding to and from Williamstown to go to a play and dinner. Art and Don would ride in the back while Joan and I would ride up front. It was such a pleasure and also great entertainment to listen to the two of them discussing all types of topics including art, literature, history, etc. and then exchange friendly jabs as to who’s alma mater was better – Don’s (Harvard) or Art’s (Yale). Or as Art might say – were they really that genial? – with that devilish twinkle in his eye. He’ll be greatly missed -until we meet again.

This tribute written by Art’s wonderful friend Bob Roseberger is a wonderful summary of Dr. Young’s life. I will cherish all of the wisdom he shared.
