Obituary of Phillip W. Becktoft
Phillip Wayne Becktoft, 54, died unexpectedly at Saratoga Hospital after being stricken at home. Born in Schenectady, NY he was the son of the late Phillip W. and Andrea Wolf Becktoft. “Flip”, as he was affectionately known, lived most of his life in the Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs area.
Phillip graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1984 and then immediately enlisted in the US Navy spending a part of his tour in Europe. He was a member of several organizations including the Loyal Order of the Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion Post.
Phillip was an absolute avid and passionate fisherman. “If there was a pond, lake river, stream or mud puddle he could catch a fish”. He believed in “catch and release”. “Flip” was a loyal and faithful friend with a big heart who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Phillip was a bigger than life personality with a raucous and gruff laugh, but although he exuded a rough exterior he was a “big teddy bear” who was incredibly loved by family and friends. He will be especially remembered for his love of mentoring, teaching and working and helping kids and young adults. Phillip touched many lives and will be sorely missed.
Besides his parents, Phillip was predeceased by one of his older brothers, Frank.
He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his daughter, Monica L. Becktoft (Christopher) of Moyock, NC; five siblings: Phillip, Christine, Michelle, Timothy and John George; and two grandchildren: Zoe’ and Danny as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871, on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
