Obituary of Michael R. Hotaling
TROY –
Michael R. Hotaling, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024 at the age of 64, after a long illness.
As a child, Michael exhibited a keen interest in radio broadcasting. After high school graduation, he graduated from the New School of Contemporary Radio. He began a long career as a Disc Jockey. He moved to Utica, where he became an incredibly popular rock DJ on WRCK. He had a beautiful baritone voice. His on-air persona was “Lee Michaels”, which morphed over time to “Ug-Lee.” He always interacted with his fans who would call in to the request line.
Given his popularity, he was in high demand with charitable organizations, where he would donate his time and talent to many worthy causes. When he returned to the Capital District, he worked for Huck Finn’s Warehouse in inventory control management for many years.
One of his greatest passions was historic preservation and he was involved with the Mount Ida Preservation Association. His other great passion was in environmental advocacy. He was inspired by Judith Enck, and worked for several local environmental groups, pounding the pavement and fundraising. He said that every dollar he raised helped to educate the public.
He was particularly interested in the PCB Pollution in the Hudson River and in Nassau Lake, where he grew up. He became acquainted with Ward Stone and they developed a years long friendship. Michael also hosted a local radio talk show on WRPI, where he interviewed Ward and many other environmental advocates on-air.
Michael was predeceased by his father, Raymond, and his sister-in-law, Darlene. He is survived by his loving mother Jeannine, his sister Debby and his best friend Brant Caird.
His family wishes to thank the caring staff at Samaritan Hospital, Dr. Mina Sun, and the caring staff of Kingsway Home Care Services for helping Michael on his final journey.
