Obituary of Richard L. Underwood
VOORHEESVILLE –
Mr. Richard L. Underwood, 79, of Voorheesville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, September 27, 2024 at the Delmar Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing.
Son of the late Louis and Marion (Guild) Underwood, Richard was born on January 16, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio, where he was raised. He has also lived in Annapolis, Maryland, Red Bank, New Jersey and finally, Voorheesville, New York.
Richard received his education from The Ohio State University, with a Bachelor of Science Degree, Majoring in Accounting.
For 33 years, Mr. Underwood was employed in the Produce Business. He worked with A & P, Safeway, Wakefern Foods, K & H Produce at Hunt Points and finally with Procacci Brothers in Philadelphia. Following his retirement from the produce business, he pursued his accounting career with the New York State Department of Health (Epic Program) for 10 years and finally ended his working career at his dream job at the Albany Country Club.
Mr. Underwood was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the United States Army from 1965 until 1971, receiving an honorable discharge for his faithful service. He was a member of the Ohio State Alumni.
Richard was an avid sportsman. He especially loved baseball, football and golf. He will be warmly remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, husband and best friend. He was loyal to the end, persistent, and possessed true grit and determination to accomplish whatever he set his mind to
Survivors include his devoted wife of 48 years, Donna (Newton) Underwood, whom he married on September 25, 1976 in Annapolis, Maryland.
Beloved Children: Branden L. Underwood, Karen A. Underwood and Waylon Underwood (Natasha Underwood) and “fur child” BooBoo.
Cherished Grandchildren: Connor L. Casolo, Adriana Casolo, Mark C. Casolo and Matthew Casolo, and “fur grand babies” Winston and Nola.
Richard is also survived by one brother, David Underwood (of Sao Paulo, Brazil) and one sister, Janice Underwood (of Wilmington, Delaware).
The Underwood Family wishes to thank all of the staff at the Delmar Center for comforting him in his last days, especially Kathleen, Richard’s special friend, who literally held his hand when we couldn't.
The Underwood Family has chosen to honor Richard’s memory in private. Cremation has taken place through the care of Simple Choices, Inc.
