FORT PLAIN –
Mervin Howard Smith, Jr., 82, of Fort Plain, formerly of Carmel, died suddenly on November 28, 2023 at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY following a short illness.
The son of the late Mervin Howard Smith, Sr. and Emma Jean (Stevens) Smith, Mervin was born on August 17, 1941 in Peekskill, NY. Mervin, Jr. grew up in Mahopac and Carmel in Putnam County, NY. He attended school at Carmel High School and worked half his working career as a landscaping employee for the Old Trolly Greenhouse in Mahopac and the Putnam County Community Hospital in the Kitchen staff. After his move to Fort Plain he completed his working career in maintenance departments, first for Interknitting Inc. in Cobleskill and later at Bassett Healthcare. Mr. Smith has lived in Fort Plain, NY for the past 40 years.
Following his favorite sports teams was a lifelong interest of his and he rooted for the NY Yankees, NY Giants, and NY Rangers.
In addition to his parents, Mervin was predeceased in death by his brothers Edison M. Smith and Alvin L. Smith.
He leaves one brother Richard C. Smith of Howes Cave N.Y, one sister Nancy J. Deangelis of Greenwich, NY, and one sister-in-law Elizabeth McClenahan of Bath, ME, as well as nine nephews and nieces. He also leaves seven cousins with whom he had lasting memories and relationships.
Cremation has taken place through the care of Simple Choices, Inc.
The family is overseeing memorial arrangements, which will be at a future date in Union Valley Chapel and Cemetery, Mahopac, NY.
