Obituary of Bruce Edward Buchanan

MAYFIELD –

Bruce Edward Buchanan, age 71, passed away July 23, 2023, peacefully, surrounded by the loving presence of his family after two years of battling esophageal cancer.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents Margaret (Cath) and Harold Buchanan, his eldest grandson, Randy James DeLack, his step-grandson, Izak Allred and his wife's daughter, Marie Collar.

Bruce was born August 4, 1951, and lived the first part of his life in the Scotia-Glenville area, and later moved to Fulton County.

He is survived by his loving and beloved wife of 18 years, Joan Buchanan, brother Brad Buchanan, and sister Bonnie Pressler (Wayne). Bruce’s children by birth and marriage include, Kim Buchanan (Dave), Carrie King (David), Angela Allred (Dave), Dan Bjorke, Jeoff Bjorke, Matthew Bjorke, David Collar, and Michael Collar (Colleen).  Bruce was also Grandfather to Katherine Ring (Daniel), Elizabeth Meglio, Zakkry Bruce DeLack, Jesse Lee McGinness, as well as Avery Collar, Janae, Kyler, and Ian Allred, and Justice and Josiah Bjorke.  Bruce was Great Papa to 5 great-grandchildren who idolized him: Rose, Myah, Azalea, Jonah, and Noah.

Bruce will always be remembered for his sense of humor, cheeky smile, and true belief of family first, always making family his priority. Bruce was the self-employed proprietor of the second generation of Buchanan’s Appliance Service operating in the greater Capital District. He loved hunting, fishing, scouting, amateur carpentry (“I’m not a carpenter," he would say) and gardening. Later in his career Bruce was employed by Walmart (Gloversville) where he met his wife, Joan.  Both retired from Walmart and spent their retirement years traveling, doing cruises, and camping together as Florida snowbirds with frequent visits to spend time with their families. Bruce was proud of his Scottish heritage and the family regularly celebrated by attending the Capital District Scottish Games and will continue to do so in his honor.

Cremation has taken place through the care of Simple Choices, Inc. Bruce’s passing and memory will be honored with a private family ceremony according to his wishes, followed next year by a celebration of life for family and friends on the Great Sacandaga Lake where he helped raise 3 generations of Buchanans.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Society for Suicide Prevention in Bruce’s memory in support of a cause he championed after losing his grandson.

Contributions can be sent in memory of Bruce Buchanan, PO BOX 486, East Greenbush, NY, 12061.

FAMILY- Like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one.
