I only just found out out that my dear Professor Thurston passed away this June. (New address, no school magazines.) My condolences to his family!
I arrived at Union at 17 years of age (1971), JUST back from a year as an exchange student in Japan, confused and (culturally) lost. (I had been accepted before going to Japan, with the intention of studying French and art, neither of which I studied at Union. [I did study Chinese though.]) Professor Thurston was my anchor and guiding angel for my entire four years, even though he wasn’t my official advisor. He even let me do art projects instead of papers twice, for classes where art projects were not the norm(!) — a small “Japanese garden” at my parents’ home, which he came to see and grade me on, and a four-plate Japanese woodblock print project, both of which were independent study projects. And when I wanted to spend more time in Japan, he helped me create my own multi-terms abroad program in Tokyo at ICU. (Union had no Japanese language classes, or Japanese programs abroad then.) And when I wanted to improve my Japanese, he helped me find way — I studied independently during the week, met a Japanese woman at Skidmore once a week (we had reciprocity with Skidmore, they had reciprocity with Cornell), and at the end of the semester, I met the professor from Cornell at Skidmore for my final (oral) exam. Professor Thurston was helpful beyond anything I can express in words, and was always there to talk with, and get advice from when I needed it.
I know he traveled the world, experienced many cultures, found true love, and lived a very full life — and may have been ready for a new adventure, but, he will be so missed on this earth! Thank you Professor Thurston (どもありがとう!), and Godspeed.

I had Dr. Donald Thursday for two History classes at Union College in the 1970s. He was a wonderful, pleasant, intelligent, intellectually sound, and meticulously cautious thinking gentleman. In those days in the 1970s Union was almost 99% Caucasian male with mostly all-male professors who were by and large older, seasonally distinguished looking as if they just walked out of an 18th Century Copley painting and began teaching your class. And there was Dr. Donald Thurston: athletic in appearance, exuberant, a good-looking youth, conservative demeanor in appearance, with a manner raised look about him, which provided a delightful insight into the factual substance of his character. I am so saddened to hear of his passing away to the next life. May almighty God grand him His Mercy and welcome him into His paradise. Union College remains so dear to my heart, and it is intellectuals like Dr. Donald Thurston who have immortalized my happy memory of this dear old college, called Union. For Don Thurston's family -- I'd like to share my condolences on the passing of a singular and amazing person and life.
I first knew Don when I was an undergraduate at Union as a student in his course on Asian art and aesthetics. As ever, he had the utmost charm and sweetness, in addition to his vast academic credentials. He enchanted those of us in his class.
I lost touch with Don, graduating in 1978, until a chance meeting with his friend, Everett Taylor, in Lubec, Maine, several years ago. Everett was most kind to put us back in touch, and knowing Don these last few years has been a blessing beyond measure. His kindness, his vast and deep appreciation of the arts were without parallel and brought so much joy to my life.
He was kind to have me and another friend to his house, with its extensive Asian art collection, more than once for dinner; and also to his place in Blue Hill with its incomparable view of the bay.
Wish we'd had more time together recently, but so deeply grateful for what we shared. We even discovered that we both loved the Peanuts characters, including Snoopy.
With my friend, MaryAnn, we found him, fallen, at his home on June 4 after he did not appear at my house for dinner at the appointed time. Truly traumatic, but so grateful that his thus received excellent comfort care in his last day.
My sincere condolences to Phyllis and Jean, Jeff and Scott and their families, he spoke of you so warmly; my prayers to you for love and peace and gratitude for such a unique and superlative life.

Deepest sympathy to Don's family. This was such sad news to me. Don was on my tenure committee and I had great fondness for him and Robert. Union was fortunate to have him on the faculty.

Don was a wonderful man whose love for Union College and for all of us in the Asian Studies program continued for decades after he retired. I met Don the year before he retired, when he was instrumental in hiring me and another young scholar from the University of Michigan to replace him – yes, it took two of us (one in History and another in Political Science) to replace him! But Don mentored us even after he left – hosting dinners, raising money for the Asian Studies program, attending events on campus with his wonderful, warm husband Robert. My husband and I have many warm memories of meals with Don and Robert, reveling vicariously in their adventures abroad! Even in the last few years, when Robert was gone and Don’s hearing going, Don thought of all of us at Union. His program and his and Robert’s names will live on. I will miss Don very much. He was a mentor and a friend, and such a vital presence that I thought he would live forever. Joyce Madancy
