Obituary of Phoebe R. Lewinski

ALBANY - Phoebe R. Lewinski, 103, of Albany, died on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, NY. Born in Yoker, Scotland (now part of Glasgow), she immigrated to the United States in July 1923 with her mother, Phoebe Parker (West), and two younger sisters to join her father Arthur Parker in New York City. The family then moved to Wappinger Falls where Phoebe graduated from high school in 1938. In 1940, she moved to Schenectady where she lived most of her adult life. She was employed as a secretary in an insurance company. She left employment to raise their three daughters. Phoebe returned to the workforce and was employed by the Albany Presbytery until her retirement. Phoebe was an active member of the Presbyterian Church community serving in various leadership capacities throughout her life. She was an avid crafter, sewing clothes for her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed knitting, quilting, and other arts and crafts. She loved tackling the toughest puzzles and was a dedicated reader of her daily newspaper until the day of her death. Phoebe believed the secret to health and a long life was to “just keep moving.” She adhered to that advice herself and spent many hours walking around her Buckingham Pond Neighborhood in Albany where she moved after the death of her husband. She made friends wherever she walked. And, she never needed a cardiologist until she was 99 years old. Phoebe especially loved time spent with her family. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, Arthur R. Lewinski. Phoebe is survived by her three daughters, Mary M. Lewinski of Albany, Deborah A. (Elmer) Streeter of Albany, and Nancy E. Lewinski of Schenectady; two grandchildren, Heather (Christopher) Orth of Glenmont, and Ryan Streeter of Arlington, VA; and four great grandchildren Tyson, Braydon, Lillyanna and Lucianna Orth of Glenmont, NY. Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, June 17, 2023 in the Bethany Reformed Church, 760 New Scotland Ave, Albany, NY 12208. Visitation will begin at 10 o’clock in the church, followed by a memorial service at 11 o'clock. Entombment will take place at the Gerald B. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Phoebe’s memory to the Bethany Reformed Church, 760 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, NY 12205. Her funeral arrangements are under the direction of Roy Bordeau, Funeral Director.
