Obituary of Shirley Marie Jay

Shirley M. Jay, Lay Pastor

Shirley M. Jay 90, of Sanders Avenue, Scotia, NY passed away peacefully at her home following a short illness.

She was born the daughter of James Augustus and Jeanette Benjamin Hinchman, in Binghamton, NY on May 17, 1929. On May 12,1947, she was united in marriage to the late Rev. Grover B. Jay, that union lasted for 48 years until his passing in November of 1995.

She was a faithful and very devoted member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church. A member of the United Methodist Woman’s group, she was a Sunday School Teacher, served as the Head of the Education Council. She also served as a Lay Pastor for the Church, and Served as a head of the Worship Committee. 

She was a volunteer at the former St. Clare’s Hospital in Schenectady, NY in the outpatient surgery department for many years. She volunteered for the Comfort Zone in Amsterdam, where she knitted winter hats for children every year.

She was employed in Insurance Billing for many years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She and her husband enjoyed gardening and providing vegetables to her family and her community. She loved to paint, sew, and quilting.

She is survived by her children: Diane Jay-Wilson, (Amy) of Enfield, CT, James G. Jay, of Houston, TX, Stephen C. Jay, of Clifton Park, NY, and Annemarie David (Dennis) of Colonie, NY. One Sister Lois Evans, of Liverpool, NY and two granddaughters Joely Conto of Schenectady, NY and Lisa Conto, of  Santa Monica, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Thomas Shield.

A Memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held  at The Amsterdam United Methodist Church, 397 Golf Course Rd., Amsterdam, NY on Saturday, June 29that 11 AM with the Rev. Judy Humphrey-Fox and the Rev. Greg DeSalvatore officiating. In Lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made  in Shirley’s name to The Shirley M. Jay United Methodist Church Memorial Fund for Children’s Ministries .

 

Interment will be private at the convenienceof the family.
