Madame Atallah was one of my favorite teachers of all time. I had her all four years for French. I was thrilled years later when I happened to live in her neighborhood in Pine Hills and I'd see her walking and get a warm hello. Funny story: in high school one day she was eating a very strange snack - I believe chocolate covered ants - and one of the students said, "eew, what are you pregnant?" Michelle blushed, smiled, and nodded and told our class to keep it quiet because she hadn't told anyone yet. I know she'll be missed. It was also so nice to see her again as an honoree at my niece's BCHS graduation this spring.

Michèle was one of the first people I remember when I came to teach in Bethlehem HS in 2001. She provided transportation and hospitality, and she treated me like I had always been part of the team. She had a special pep, bounce, and positivity. She brought cheer and humor into challenging situations. An inspiration. Also, no one in all these years since has produced a better hummus. Thanks, Michèle. Rest well. May your family and all of us have your blessing and encouragement each day. Love, Peter K.

I am very lucky to have Michele as my host mother as I arrived in the US almost two decades ago. She guided me through adapting to the US and my senior year of high school. She treated me just like one of her children with so much love. Specific memories are a bit hazy now but whenever I think of Michele, I always feel safe, supported, and cared for. A few years ago, I was able to reconnect with Michele in person. It was like picking up where we left off. She was still giving motherly advice and looking after me with such compassion. I am thankful to be influenced by her and I will miss her very much.

Yesterday, when Danaé sent us the sad news that Michele had passed away, our family Whatsapp started to crackle, filled with our messages of shock and sadness.
We only have good memories with Michele. Coming from abroad, jet lagged, I remember how I immediately felt welcomed in the minute I met her, with her encouraging smile and kindness. She took so well care of others, that it was totally natural for her to welcome our kids, Florian, Danaé and Gala for several weeks during the summer. Thanks to her, and to your family, they had a wonderful time and built life memories with these stays upstate New-York. During the few years where we continued those exchanges, each time we met it was a joyfull time, filled with curiosity, empathy, attention, kindness, generosity. She was a wonderful human being and a wonderful example for all of us.
We are too far away to come to Thacher Park this Friday, but we will not wear black that day and our thoughts will be with you. With our love.
Denis, Anne, Florian, Danaé, Gala
Michele was and will remain in my mind my "american mother".
Not only did she make me feel safe and welcomed, she also made me come out of my shell, encouraged me to try things, she made me laugh, and she gave the best hugs I've ever had.
Over the years, we often spoke of our shared experiences with Florian and Danaé and we always talked of Michele's generosity and selflessness as a huge part of why we loved it so much.
We will remember and honor her life by celebrating the positive impact she had on each of us, and trying to be a little more like her each day.
Gala
Thank you for welcoming us into your home and giving us love. We will always remember you. Georges, Leila and Tarek, I send you all my strength and love.
Danaé

I met Michele visiting Bethlehem School with a group of Spanish students and deceased teacher Emilio Antero. We even had the chance to stay at Michelle’s who at that time had a little daughter (Leyla if I’m not mistaken)
I just remember her smile, her generosity with us and the lovely weeks we shared. She came to Spain (Cáceres) in 1995 when I last saw her.I send all my condolences to the family.

I had Madame Atallah for a French class which I couldn’t have cared less about at the time. This was a fact which she was of course aware of. In spite of my apathy to the subject, Madame never allowed it to interfere with her continual encouragement of my development as a person. She never let individual differences and idiosyncrasies affect her faith in her students. Over the three years I had her as a teacher, I saw her continually treat even the most difficult students with unconditional care and respect. I know that I am one of many students who had the good fortune of stumbling upon her wisdom. Love and peace to her and her family.
