Obituary of Anthony Vincent Winig
LEBANON SPRINGS –
Anthony Vincent Winig, 74, of Lebanon Springs, NY “crossed the bar to see his Pilot’s face” on October 26, 2025, after a long battle with cancer.
Born on September 10, 1951 in Hudson, NY to the late Vincent Winig and the late Jean Hunt Winig Swinyer, Tony graduated from Hudson High School in 1969. He attended SUNY Maritime and graduated in 1973 with a degree in nuclear science. Upon graduation Tony accepted a commission in the United States Naval Reserves and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1984. Tony spent his career as a mechanical engineer working with various companies on start-ups of power plants, water treatment plants, and semiconductor plants. His career took him to many states and overseas including India, Venezuela, the UAE, and Brazil.
In 1955 Tony met his future wife Elizabeth Sheffer in preschool. After graduating from high school they went their separate ways to reunite in 2001. Spending many years together, Tony and Bitsy happily married on September 6, 2014. Together they had great adventures, traveling to Lithuania, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, and summers on Cape Cod. He loved going to Walt Disney World and taking Disney cruises with his granddaughters.
Tony was dedicated to his alma mater SUNY Maritime and actively participated in planning class reunions. He spent several summers as an instructor in engineering on the Maritime training ship. The friendships formed with his classmates were an important part of his life and he cherished each and every one.
Tony was a devout Episcopalian and enjoyed the music and sang with his whole heart. He was active in the New Lebanon community and would lend a hand to anyone who needed help.
Tony is survived by the love of his life, Elizabeth Sheffer-Winig and his step-children Melissa (John) Benoit, Jane (John Walsh) Allard, Molly Allard, Robert (Jennifer) Allard, Abigail (Anthony Paulo) Allard, and John (Amy) McGee; and his beloved grandchildren Neely (Michael) Weuste-Benoit, Gracie Benoit, Olivia Allard, Alora Allard-Walsh, Evelyn Paulo, Freya Allard-Walsh, Avery McGee, and Matthew McGee. Tony is also survived by his siblings Guy (Annie) Winig, Vincent (Jan) Winig, Paul (Donna) Winig, and Jennifer Swinyer. He was predeceased by his brother James Swinyer. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the dedicated nurses, doctors, and staff of the Phelps Cancer Center in Pittsfield, MA for the care he received while undergoing treatment. Warmest and loving thanks go to Elizabeth, Tom, Matt, and Rose of Community Hospice who cared for Tony during his final months.
