Obituary of Arthur Earl Carroll, Jr.
JACKSON –
Arthur Earl Carroll, Jr. (Art/Butch), 73, of Jackson, NY, formerly of White Creek, passed away on April 8, 2025 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. Art was born, as he told it, “On a very snowy evening” March 4, 1952, at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, NY. He was the third child born to the late Arthur Earl Carroll, Sr. and Arvilla Gates Carroll of White Creek. Art attended and graduated from Cambridge Central School. He was a long-time resident of White Creek where he made his home with his “child bride” Beverly, whom he married in 1973 – one week after she graduated from high school – just one of the stories he loved to tell anyone who would listen.
After his graduation he attended trade school and Lincoln Welding in Ohio. Upon returning home he began his career as an apprentice with the Plumbers and Steamfitters UA Local 7 out of Latham where he proudly worked until he retired. Upon retirement from the union, he kept busy mowing lawns and then selling and servicing Generac generators until his health started to slow him down.
Art was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He passed this legacy on to his children. His greatest joy was spending time with his kids. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking (although recently he did more napping in the woods than hunting). As it became difficult to walk in later years, he enjoyed going for drives instead. He thought nothing of driving all day, leaving early to go to Hampton Beach, spend a couple hours, and back the same day. His favorite ride though, and last year he’d do this more than once a week, was to the Adirondacks where he never tired of the same sights, looking for snakes in Olmstedville, stopping at the lookout in Newcomb, parking near the steel bridge near Long Lake, enjoying lunch at the Long Lake Diner or The Adirondack Hotel and heading home around dusk, all the while Johnny Cash tunes were playing over and over.
Art leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Beverly (who although she complained about being kidnapped and taken on these rides, would kill for one more go around); his children Sarah Marshall (Chris) of Oshkosh, WI; Megan Carroll (Tolu) of Ash Grove; Brian Carroll (Kayla – his favorite daughter-in-law) of White Creek; and Daren Carroll of Lviv, Ukraine; his siblings, Shellie Carroll and Jeff Carroll of White Creek; six grandchildren, Hailey Barnette (Springfield, OH), Christian Carroll (Manchester, VT), Robin Carroll (Ash Grove), Liam, Kieran, and Nora Carroll (White Creek); and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and most recently, his sister Tannica Carroll.
Art bravely fought a short but intense battle with lymphoma. Unfortunately, his body could not tolerate the treatment despite his courage and willingness to try. He was brought home on hospice and cared for by his family, supported by a host of friends and relatives assisted by their Community Hospice team (special thanks to Lisa and Tracy for their compassionate care).
The family is incredibly grateful to all who supported them during this difficult time. From those who put their lives on hold to cross the country to help (you know who you are), to those who came to hospital to sit with him so he was never alone (sometimes overnight) to making sure he never ran out of Battenkill chocolate milk when he got home, to washing the picture window so he could look out on his beloved pond and critters, to organizing and providing meals, the list goes on. Art was truly loved and supported.
His family would like to invite all who knew him to come visit, share fond memories and enjoy each other’s company and good food at a drop-in reception which will celebrate his life. Come to the American Legion in Cambridge on Saturday, June 28 anytime from noon to 5:00 pm. It’s your chance to tell your side of the stories. Call or text Art’s phone 518- 686-7006 if you’d like an event reminder as the date nears, or to leave a message or memory we can share if you are unable to attend. You can also post a message on his tribute page at SimpleChoicesCremation.com.
