Obituary of Maurice E. Drown
LATHAM –
The Reverend Dr. Maurice E. Drown Jr. (Mickey) of Latham, NY passed away on March 24, 2025, at the age of 79, with his loving wife Charla by his side.
Mickey was born on May 27, 1945 in St. Johnsbury, VT. He was the fourth of five children born to Maurice and Portia Drown. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1963, as did Charla. They also attended and graduated from the University of Vermont. In 1966, they were married at Grace United Methodist Church in St. Johnsbury. Mickey went on to attend seminary at Boston University where he received his Master’s degree in Theology and later his Doctor of Ministry.
Mickey found true fulfillment in helping others and set that example for all who knew him. He served as a pastor to three churches in the Capital District: Albany Street Methodist in Schenectady, Christ Church in Troy, and for over 20 years at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albany. In addition to his pastoral duties, he was involved with many community organizations serving those in need, he would rarely say no to anyone asking for help. After retiring from the ministry, he ran a mentorship program, helping underserved youth earn their high school equivalency credentials and connecting them with professional mentors.
Mickey loved to laugh! He brought his unique sense of humor and strong work ethic to everything he did. He liked to keep busy, even on “vacation” so his children had all seen a good deal of the US and Europe before graduating high school. He spent one summer driving the family from New York to California and back in an RV creating many cherished memories. Another summer, he participated in a “pulpit exchange” with a minister in the UK. He and the family lived in Sheffield, England where he served 2 churches, then they travelled across Europe for 3 weeks before returning home.
Bar Harbor, Maine held a special place in his heart. His parents honeymooned there, as did he and Charla, and he would return there for many family vacations. On one of those visits, he found a lot for sale covered in blueberries and overlooking the ocean. He and Charla purchased the lot and eventually built a second home there that the family continues to enjoy.
He was a loving and supportive father, grandfather, and husband. Mickey is survived by his wife Charla of 58 years, his children Laura Leonard (Mike), Aaron, and Kara Dockery (Will) and his grandchildren Ethan, Emma, Sean, and William, and a large extended family.
A celebration of life service will take place in St. Johnsbury this Summer.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
