Joseph Lopez and Maria Alfaro posted a condolence

Our sincere condolences to Mike’s family on their loss. At a past time and place in our lives, Mike was a dear friend, colleague and co-worker who will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to protecting and furthering the employment rights of all workers as well as the civil rights of all members of our society.
In the late ‘70s Mike was one of the original union organizers of the workers at the legal aid program where we both worked. He also helped to organize a counter demonstration, in the Southwest Detroit neighborhood where we lived, against a public march by an American Nazi group espousing racism and hate.
We profoundly regret that over the past 30 years our friendship and our lives drifted apart due simply to time, distance and personal circumstance.
Mike was a person of exceptional integrity, conviction, and kindness, and we know that we are not alone in having been blessed with his friendship. And for that we are eternally grateful.
Joseph Lopez and Maria Alfaro

We have so many wonderful memories of Mike. He was always smiling. He always had insight on the world which he imparted with humor and ability to not make you feel dumb. We spent a lot of time together doing fun activities and even a week together which is always a test of true friendship! We will miss you Mike, but we are glad you are done suffering. We will take care of Marilyn!

When Uncle Mike was born his parents gave him the American name Michael. In college he legally changed his name to Miguel Genaro Ortiz, so I wanted to be Mariana Teresa Ortiz. Dad squelched that, saying no one else in our family is changing their name! He had shortened his name to Paul from Paulino, and Uncle Rich used Richard instead of Ricardo, but that was before computers.

So very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I worked with Mike at CSEA as his legal assistant from 2006-2013. Mike was one of the most gentle and sweetest men, so very kind to everyone. We shared a love of latin music and he made me 2 CDs of music to dance to and enjoy. My heart goes out to you all, may he rest peacefully.
