Obituary of Michael McDowell

DELMAR –
Michael McDowell, 68, died on Tuesday morning February 11, 2025 at Albany Medical Center. He was born in Chelsea, MA on May 26, 1956.
Michael was an Air Force veteran and served as Captain, with primary specialties as; Missile Operations Officer, Missile Combat Crew Commander, Minuteman Command Data Buffer, and Air Weapons Director. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, AF Longevity Service Award w/1 Oak Leaf clusters, AF Outstanding Unit Award w/2 Oak Leaf clusters, Air Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the AF Commendation Medal.
Michael leaves his loving wife of 17 years, Kimberly Jane McDowell; his son, Zachary (MacKenzie) McDowell of Delmar and daughter Jessica McDowell of Englewood, FL; his step-daughters, Valerie Piela of Albany; and Amanda Piela, of Concord, NC.
The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Fellegi and the staff of the VA Home Based Community Care Team; his friends, Christa Unright Khan and Daniela Filmer, for their loving care and support of Michael in his time of need.
Kim would like to express extra sincere appreciation to Mike’s children for their unwavering love and support of their father, especially as his illness progressed. Mike would often be seen walking all around Delmar and was affectionately dubbed “The Mayor of Delmar”. He had a great sense of humor and a big heart, he would do anything for his friends and family.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial contributions in Michael’s name can be made to St. Jude’s.
Funeral services and military burial for Michael will be held privately among Michael’s closest friends and family.
