Obituary of Mary Ahl
ALBANY –
Mary Ahl, 67, of Albany, formerly of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2024 in Albany.
She was born on December 18, 1956 in Brooklyn. Daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Ahl.
Mary was raised in Brooklyn, where she lived for most of her life, before moving to Staten Island for a few years before retirement. After retirement she moved upstate to Albany where she has since resided until her passing.
Mary received her education from Fort Hamilton High School, graduating in 1975. She received an Associate’s Degree from The College of Staten Island in 1993 as well as a Bachelor’s Degree from The College of Staten Island in 1997.
Mary worked for Brooklyn Public Library, where she retired from after 30 years of service.
Being sober for 26 years she was an active member within the AA community. She often volunteered her time to help improve herself and others, be it hosting meetings, helping newcomers, or providing outreach to those in need. She made many good friends and connections throughout her time in sobriety and undoubtedly helped change and save many lives.
Mary was a lover of the arts. She was an avid reader and talented writer. Anyone who knew her, knew her love of Sci-fi, particularly Star Trek and Mr. Spock. She also had a deep love for music that spanned many decades and genres. She'd love to sit and fiddle with any instrument she could get her hands on. She was a proud member of the LGBT community. A fierce advocate in her younger years before coming out later in life, herself. She always found much joy displaying her beloved rainbow flags and attending Pride events. She was a kind, giving, and loving individual. With many friends and family members who loved her dearly. She always made time for others and though she only raised one child, there were many who called her Mom.
Survivors include Steven Allgier (her former husband and friend for life) their first date was the 4th of July 1977 and were married 3 months later, on October 30, 1977 in her parent’s home in Brooklyn. The marriage lasted nearly 25 years.
She was the loving mother of Jeremy Allgier (who died in infancy, only living 11 days 9/8/1978 - 9/19/1978) and Kathleen Allgier born 1981 who survives. Katie was her pride and joy and Mary often referred to her as her rock.
She was the 6th of 9 children born. Her surviving siblings are: Charles, Gregory, Arlene, Christopher, Elizabeth, John and Thomas.
In addition to her parents, Charles (1989) and Elizabeth (2001) and son Jeremy (1978), Mary was also predeceased by her youngest brother Matthew (2022).
