Caroline Suzanne Gustafson

Obituary of Caroline Suzanne Niver Deininger Gustafson

AUSTERLITZ –

Caroline Suzanne Niver Deininger Gustafson, 79, of the Town of Austerlitz, NY, formerly of New Providence, Maplewood, NJ, passed away peacefully at her home on April 6, 2024.

The daughter of the late Harold B. and Anne Niver, she was born on May 15, 1944 in Newark, NJ.

Caroline, affectionately known as Sue, was raised in Maplewood, NJ. She received her education from Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ (class of 1962) and Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA (class of 1966).

Her employment history includes Prudential, Newark and Florham Park, NJ, the NYS Department of Education, NYS Department of Civil Service.

Her memberships and affiliations include: a charter member of CRAFTS of NJ, a charter member of the Austerlitz Historical Society, EAIA, M-WTCA. In all these organizations she enjoyed the comradeship of the members.

Sue always had an interest in art and expressed that in oil painting, also pastels, doing Frakturs and other PA Dutch artwork, including Scherenschnitte . She loved her best friend from 1st grade throughout their mutual lives. She almost always had a smile on her face and she loved people. She loved to read, especially period mysteries. One of her favorite things to do was to make gifts for people, instead of buying them. Sue enjoyed camping and the Adirondacks. Much of her early summer life was spent down the shore which I am sure led to her love of seafood. We shared a love for our bears, Bart and Fred, and treated them as would a member of the family. She served as co-editor of the Gristmill, putting her knowledge of grammar to good use. She loved classical music. This was probably inherited from her father who was an organist and piano teacher. Sue enjoyed many hours of playing the piano. It was always a problem with the name she used: C. Suzanne Gustafson (Sue). Each computer system would change it in differing ways: C. Gustafson, C.S. Gustafson, Suzanne Gustafson. This was always a problem being known with so many different names. She will always be Sue to me.

Survivors include her devoted husband of 48 years, William A. Gustafson, whom she married in New Providence, NJ on February 21, 1976. She is also survived by her in-laws from two families and their children, her nieces and nephews, who were much loved and always in her thoughts, as well as her family of many cousins, their children and grandchildren.

The Gustafson Family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene Counties, the Columbia County Office for the Aging and Chatham Rescue.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: The Community Hospice, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill, NY 12414.
