Obituary of Douglas A. Moran

Schenectady, NY- Douglas Arlington Moran, 76, of Schenectady, passed away on October 30, 2015 in the loving arms of his wife with family at his side. He was born on June 1, 1939 in Elizabethtown, NY to Violet (Talbot) and Jack Moran, the oldest of four boys. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 35 years, Karen (Meluch) Moran; his daughters, Kim (Joe) Markland of Franklin, MA., Colleen (Michael) Vogele of Chapel Hill, NC., his brothers, Malcolm (Barbara) Moran of Jacksonville, FL., Larry (Verna) Moran of Harwinton, CT., John (Sandy) Moran of Deltona, FL., his brother-in-law Paul Meluch of Schenectady; two grandchildren, Michael and Lauren Markland, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved son, Guy. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many loving and loyal friends, who provided much needed support and companionship during his illness. Doug served in the United States Air Force, and had many stories to tell about his time being stationed in Alaska before it became a state. While there, he was Airman of the Month in recognition of his “outstanding performance of duty”. He worked in the altitude chamber and as a medical assistant and was honorably discharged. He worked various jobs before retiring, his last being as a painter for the former O.D Heck Development Center. Doug loved Duke basketball and his New York Yankees, especially Derek Jeter. He was fortunate to be at many Yankee games that were milestone events, such as Jeter’s 3000 hit game and his last Yankee home game. He loved to play pool and ran Hank’s pool league for many years. He was an avid reader and loved listening to music by his favorite artists, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Delbert McClinton, and the 50’s music he grew up with. Doug was always ready to lend a hand to anyone that needed it, but was reluctant to request the same. He maintained his sense of humor throughout his illness, still able to make those around him laugh. Children were especially drawn to him; he could make them laugh even in the supermarket checkout line. He was usually the only adult to get into the swimming pool with the younger children.
